Meeting Halsey

"The best things in life are unexpected, because there were no expectations." - Eli Khamarov

On one of my impractical 16-year-old "mom don't tell me how to live my life I'm going to meet and marry Harry Styles" journeys, the most unexpected of the unexpected happened.

Slightly infatuated with the youngest One Direction member, the majority of my first and second paychecks from my first job went to an ungodly priced concert ticket that was just about 6,000 miles away from the stage.

The distance didn't matter to my naive mind at the time because "it was just a concert" - a concert with 30,000 other girls throwing, flashing, and screaming the unmentionables at the billion dollar boyband. This wasn't a movie though, and there was no way he would spot me out in the back of the crowd all the way in Uganda, so I did what every other slightly fanatical teenage girl would do.

I casually found their hotel in New York, and casually jumped on a train to said place with my friend, while I just casually convinced my mom that what I was doing was completely legal and there was no chance of ending up in the NYC Department of Correction that night.

Despite having the Irish name Erin, I did not have the luck of the Irish. By the time we got to his hotel, he was at the Rockefeller Center doing an interview and by the time we arrived at the Rockefeller Center he was in East Rutherford for the New Jersey concert. Talk about playing cat and mouse.

Fast foward 4 hours and several attempts later, I am sitting all the way in the back - with floor seats mind you - so you can just imagine the view I had. Sweaty, frizzy hair blowing in every direction was nice but I see it every day at school so I wasn't too ecstatic. Not being vertically challenged at a whopping 5'9" was an advantage, but not by much.

Fast foward a little bit more to after the opening act (5 Seconds of Summer) and everyone scattered during the short intermission to go to the bathroom, get food, drinks, and fresh air. I was amazed on how thoughtless people could be. Who wouldn't pass up on this opportunity? My bladder could wait but the open space near the cat walk could not.

Tripping over bags, jackets, and our own two feet we made our way to the bit (a lot) more expensive area near the stage, where several other people had the same idea. If I told you it was that easy I would be lying, but if I told you what actually happened you might question my sanity...I'll go with the latter.

Security and nine-year-olds with their rich parents weren't too thrilled with the overpopulated section of teenage girls so the majority of us were ushered out. (The majority of us twitch twitch wink wink). Ending my streak of bad luck I squeezed into one of the aisles while my friend separated and squished herself in an aisle further back. I applaud her for taking one for the team. Thanks Sarina.

Being a lot less socially awkward in this type of scenery, when the lights dimmed with music playing, lights flashing, and fireworks exploding, indicating the beginning of the concert, I turned to the girl next to me and we screamed like the little nine-year-olds surrounding us. Long and behold that random girl next to me was Halsey.

Halsey.

Halsey. Halsey. Halsey. Halsey. Halsey. Halsey. Halsey. Halsey.

My bladder that I've been holding in almost combusted and my mouth couldn't form words. Not only was I feet away from the love of my life on stage, but I was inches away from one of my favorite singers. Life is great, life is great.

After the concert I asked for a photo which she courteously agreed to. It was bizarre, she just acted like a normal girl who was at a concert for a band she liked. Talking to her was so casual it was mind blowing and unreal. Plus, she's hung out with Harry in the cold hard flesh so I mean I was basically talking to him from a secondary source?

Of course I couldn't share my excitement with the rest of my friends because they have no clue who she is, but she's exponentially becoming more and more famous, and when she's on the red carpet or playing at the VMA's in a few years, I will always have my experience with my picture to remember it.

Long story short, things don't always happen like they happen in movies, but most of the best things that happen, come unexpected.
